Working at Umbrella

Our people stay with us for a long time. The average tenure across the group is just over nine years, and several colleagues have been with Umbrella since the original laboratories were consolidated in 1998.

We recruit infrequently and deliberately. When a position is open it is because the work genuinely needs doing, not because we are filling a headcount plan.

Senior Systems Administrator

Group IT · Umbrella Corporation

Urgent Full time Permanent
Location: London (with travel to Dublin and Frankfurt) Reference: UC-IT-0419 Posted: 14 March 2019

Umbrella Corporation is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Administrator to take ownership of the group's server estate across our three operating entities. This is an urgent appointment following the departure of the previous post-holder.

The role

You will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance and security of all group infrastructure: application servers, database hosts, backup systems, networking and remote access. The estate is a mixture of on-premise hardware at the Dublin and Frankfurt sites and hosted servers supporting the London office.

This is a single-person team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the entire infrastructure of the group, working directly with the Head of Group IT and with the operational leads at each entity. There is no second-line support function and no managed service provider; escalation goes to you. We are candid about this because it is the defining feature of the position.

A significant part of the first twelve months will be spent documenting and rationalising systems that have grown organically since the early 2000s. Some environments are well understood; others are not. You should expect to spend considerable time establishing what is actually running before making changes to it.

Responsibilities

  • Administration of Linux and Windows server estate across three sites
  • Backup, restore and disaster recovery procedures for all critical systems
  • User account, access and remote connectivity management
  • Patching, monitoring and capacity planning
  • Documentation of existing systems and migration planning
  • Out-of-hours support on a rota (currently one person)

Requirements

  • Minimum seven years in systems administration, at least three in a senior role
  • Strong Linux administration; shell scripting essential
  • Practical experience of backup and recovery in production environments
  • Networking fundamentals: routing, firewalling, VPN, DNS
  • Experience working without a team around you
  • Willingness to travel to Dublin and Frankfurt as required

Desirable

  • Experience in a regulated manufacturing or pharmaceutical environment
  • Database administration (PostgreSQL, MySQL or MSSQL)
  • Configuration management tooling
  • German or Irish language skills

How to apply

Please send a CV and covering letter quoting reference UC-IT-0419 to careers@umbrella-corp.example. Applications are reviewed as they are received; the position will close as soon as a suitable candidate is appointed.

Umbrella Corporation is an equal opportunities employer. We do not accept unsolicited approaches from recruitment agencies.

Speculative applications

We keep speculative CVs on file for twelve months and review them whenever a position opens. If your background is relevant to pharmaceutical manufacture, chemical process work or clinical services, we would be glad to hear from you even when nothing is advertised.

Send your CV to careers@umbrella-corp.example.
